Xerox Igen 4: Better, Stronger, Faster
When it comes to digital presses from the major manufacturers, the digital printing community has a tendency to fixate on one particular metric to the exclusion of all others – and typical responses to the new Xerox Igen 4 are no different.
Pager per minute is the magic phrase in digital printing press circles; nothing else seems to be anywhere near as important as the crucial PPM metric, which really doesn’t make much sense. Pager per minute is important, but it’s only part of the overall delivery. Downtime affects performance as well, as does the cost of ink and toner, hardware, or service. If some new digital printing machine were developed that could punch out, let’s say, a thousand pages per minute, but it required a proprietary toner priced at a thousand dollars an ounce, and it could only run two hours a day, I can’t see too many people using it.
Still, the masses have lined up against the Xerox Igen 4 largely because there is no increase in PPM speed over the Igen 3. Never mind the fact that Xerox has spent millions improving the overall design, granting the newest Igen model vastly improved image consistency, higher overall image quality, a closer match to offset output, lower running costs, faster project turnaround times, and higher uptime than previous models.
In fact, Xerox claims that the overall productivity levels of the Igen 4 are up somewhere between 25-35% over the Igen 3, thanks largely to a restructured internals and reconfigured software interface.
Sure, the Igen 4 doesn’t look any different – in fact, it doesn’t sound any different either – but it puts out a heck of a lot more product in the same window of time, and for less money, than its predecessor. Pager per minute aside, if this isn’t a generational improvement, then what is?
